Financial Aid
Newhouse merit aid decisions will be made by mid-April. This includes fellowships, tuition scholarships and instructional associate positions. If you're selected for merit-based aid, you'll first be contacted by e-mail or phone and then you'll receive a letter with the details. We will send an email to all admitted applicants once the first round of offers have been made. Please be aware that almost all of our awards are partial and we don't have nearly enough aid to go around. The mid-April decisions will just be our first round of aid; other instructional associate positions and research aide positions open up during the academic year, but we have no packages that cover all expenses. Graduate positions are also available in other offices around campus; many of those openings are posted on the University's job site at https://www.sujobopps.com/.
U.S. citizens who have not yet applied for need based aid for either the summer session or the academic year should file the FAFSA as soon as possible. Please be aware that in order to be eligible for loan money during Summer 2009, you must fill out a 2008-09 FAFSA in addition to the 2009-10 FAFSA. The link below will take you to loan information specific to graduate students: http://financialaid.syr.edu/Graduate.htm. Students must complete both a FAFSA form and the SU Graduate Application for Financial Aid. For FAFSA information and to fill out your FAFSA online, go to http://fafsa.ed.gov.
In addition to the FAFSA, students enrolling in summer courses also need to fill out the University's summer financial aid application. Information about this can be found at http://financialaid.syr.edu/summer.htm.
The Financial Aid Office at SU will notify you regarding your loan eligibility as soon as your information is received.
Typically, students are eligible for a maximum of $10,250 in Stafford Loan funds for the summer and up to $20,500 for the academic year.
There are also Graduate Plus loans for which there is no maximum loan limit (annually or lifetime). Eligibility is calculated by the Cost of Attendance minus other financial aid and a basic credit check must be passed. Information is available at http://financialaid.syr.edu/gradloans.htm.
