Masters Program

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Newhouse takes part in the annual Central New York Communications Career Consortium, a two-day recruitment fair. Prospective employers from over 40 companies come to the Syracuse campus to provide information and interview students. Most of these employers are from the Northeast U.S., and many pre-select the students they want to interview. You apply by submitting your resume and cover letter several weeks in advance of the Consortium. You'll be competing for interview attention with Newhouse undergraduate students (many of whom will have had multiple internships) as well as students from the other Consortium schools: Ithaca College, Le Moyne College, Colgate University and Cornell University.

In general, communications companies in all industries have far more applicants for jobs than available positions. This means they don't have to recruit employees; instead, the pressure's on you to find a job. Newhouse grads are working all over the United States and abroad as well, and many of them are willing to help you network and find that first job. All Newhouse alums are eligible to receive a free newsletter for one year after graduation listing job opportunities.

Salaries

It's impossible to give salary predictions because pay varies based on your previous experience, the position you're taking, the company, and the geographic location. (Not to mention the economy!) A master's degree (from any school, not just Newhouse) will not guarantee a higher level job or higher salary if the student does not have any prior professional experience. The majority of master's students who graduate with no experience take jobs at entry level or those with slightly higher salaries. Where a master's degree will really begin to pay off will be in the form of earlier promotions and raises a few years out. Students with prior experience can expect salary increases of $3,000-$8,000 or more with a master's degree.

The Newhouse Career Development Center

Students can also check the Newhouse Career Development Center's Web site for more information. However, we ask that prospective students keep in mind that while the information on the Career Development Center Web site is available to everyone, the services of the Career Development Center staff are reserved for current Newhouse students and Newhouse alums. They don't have the resources to answer questions from prospective students. (If you visit us for our Fall Open House or one of our Spring Preview Days, you'll get to meet some of the CDC staff and see their facilities.)
