INTERNSHIPS & SEMINARS
Newhouse has its own Career Development Center (CDC) dedicated to helping our enrolled students and alumni conduct a self-directed, proactive job and/or internship search.
Internships
Graduate students are permitted to do internships for credit, and, while internships are not required in all of our programs, it's essential that you have some work experience in communication before you set out to find a job. Syracuse has a wealth of media firms, and most of our students are able to find internships without too much difficulty. Important notes here: (1) many communications internship providers do not pay their interns. Those internships that offer compensation tend to be low-paying; (2) international students must work through Syracuse University's Center for International Services to get permission for practical training.
Our CDC posts internship opportunities on its bulletin boards and also sends them out via an e-mail listserv. The CDC also hosts an internship fair each fall, featuring area communications companies that are interested in having Newhouse students (undergraduate and graduate) work for them as interns. Students may also use the resources of the Syracuse University Internship Program, located in the main Center for Career Services, Schine Student Center. Students must work through this office if they're doing an internship for credit.
Seminars
Students take part in a series of career workshops during their time at Newhouse. By completing a “Job Hunt Marathon,” you will gain access to an extensive database of Newhouse alums. In addition, the CDC offers resume critiquing, mock interviews, etc. It's each student's responsibility to take advantage of these resources. We can teach you networking skills and give you access to our alums, but it's up to you to put those skills to work.
