CITY OF SYRACUSE
By choosing to attend the Newhouse School, students also choose to live in a unique region of New York State and the Northeast. Syracuse University is located within the city of Syracuse, which is the geographic center of the state, earning the region's title of Central New York.
Throughout the year, campus bustles with a wide variety of student activities, including theatrical, musical, and dance performances; movie and lecture series; art and photography exhibitions; community service campaigns and programs; and intramural and NCAA Division I sporting events.
Syracuse combines all the amenities of a major metropolitan area with small-town charm and an affordable cost of living. It offers a variety of experiences in each of its four seasons. The Syracuse metropolitan area is home to more than half a million people who take advantage of an active social scene and the region's natural recreational resources.
Syracuse offers a thriving arts and entertainment culture, featuring assets such as the Everson Museum of Art, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, the Syracuse Opera Company, Syracuse Stage, the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology, and the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park. The region also showcases its unique history through attractions such as the Erie Canal Museum, the Salt Museum, and Sainte Marie Among the Iroquois living history museum.
Not far from campus is historic Armory Square, a downtown hotspot with trendy boutiques, dance clubs, and restaurants to satiate cravings for everything from sushi and Thai food to pasta and pizza. Campus shuttles also run regularly to the ShoppingTown Mall and the Carousel Center, the region's largest shopping and entertainment complex.
Yes, it does snow, and sometimes it snows a lot. But this is a gorgeous place to spend the summer and fall, and those long winters build character and community.

Geographically, we're about 4 hours by car from New York City and Toronto, Canada. We're located at the intersection of Interstate 81 and Interstate 90 (the New York State Thruway). The Finger Lakes region of New York is about 45 minutes west of Syracuse; the Adirondack Mountains are about an hour and a half to our east.
